This one from CordeliaIsn’tWriting:
Where should a chronology-obssessed reader place the forthcoming “Tortoise and the Mare”?
Great to see the Tales of Ciel readership looking ahead. For the uninitiated, The Tortoise and the Mare is the forthcoming companion novella slated for an August release date. Good news for you, CordeliaIsn’tWriting! The parenthetical attached to this one is (0.1). That’s right, it’s a pure prequel. Not one line of the novella spoils anything that comes after it.
For the true chronological purest, you can read it before any other book in the series. For completionists who’ve already reached the end of the published material, it works just as well as an interquel. The story follows Hekuba Klaeda and the crew of Tortuga. You can come to this one completely fresh or enjoy the extra color it adds to secondary characters you met across the first trilogy.
For anyone keeping track, the most narratively-sound reading order after this one comes out will be:
- The Tortoise and the Mare
- Ardent Wings on Jealous Skies
- Ophiuchus Flinched
- The Clouds, from Afar
- The Mark of Cain
